Costco card stacking in 2026: how to clear 4%+ on every dollar.
Executive membership plus the Costco Anywhere Visa creates a clean 4% floor. Here's the math, the membership-tier breakeven, and where the stack actually breaks down.
By RetailWorld team
Costco's payment ecosystem is unusually rigid: only Visa is accepted in-warehouse, no mobile wallets at the register (debit/credit chip-and-PIN only), and no third-party payment middlemen. Those constraints mean the highest-return play is also the simplest one — and most resellers leave money on the table by not running it.
The base stack
Two compounding rewards on every Costco purchase, both available to every Costco member:
- Executive membership: 2% back on Costco purchases, capped at $1,250 in annual reward (≈ $62,500 in spend).
- Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi: 2% back on Costco and Costco.com purchases, with no cap on the Costco-specific rate.
Stacked, that's a clean 4% return on every dollar spent at Costco — before any retailer-specific promos. Add the Costco Anywhere Visa's 4% on gas (capped at $7,000/year combined with the 3% travel/restaurant tier) and the card pulls its weight outside Costco too.
When Executive pays for itself
Executive membership runs $130/year ($65 above the standard Gold Star tier). At 2% back, you break even at $6,500 in annual Costco spend. Most reseller-grade volume clears that in a single Q4 month, so for anyone moving meaningful Costco SKUs through a buying group, Executive is a no-brainer.
Costco Shop Cards as a third lever
Costco Shop Cards are physical Costco-branded gift cards that don't expire and can be reloaded. You can buy them in-warehouse with the Costco Anywhere Visa (counts as a Costco purchase, so the 2% Anywhere Visa + 2% Executive both still apply on the load) and then spend them later. The interesting twist: Shop Cards are accepted online, so you can effectively pay for Costco.com with a 'Costco purchase' rather than a direct Visa charge. Useful when running multiple cards or routing different purchases.
What doesn't work at Costco
- Mastercard, Amex, and Discover are not accepted in-warehouse. Online has slightly broader acceptance but not for Costco-branded payment.
- Apple Pay / Google Pay aren't accepted at the register — chip-and-PIN only.
- Chase Ink Cash's 5% office-supply category does NOT trigger at Costco; Costco codes as a wholesale club, not an office store.
- Sam's Club and BJ's gift cards are not interchangeable with Costco Shop Cards.
